At Babylon Elementary School and Babylon Memorial Grade School, students see things from a different perspective — sometimes even from upside down on a yoga mat! First implemented three years ago, yoga classes are offered as recess options two days a week for all Babylon students from kindergarten through sixth grade.
According to Heather Simonson, the district’s yoga specialist, the benefits of this program are multifaceted. “Yoga brings the students a greater sense of peace and calm and the tools to better manage their emotions,” she says. “It also helps them with their academics because it encourages them to focus their attention and not get distracted.” As far as the physical benefits of yoga, Simonson explains that “it builds the children’s strength and improves their flexibility and balance.”
