Recognizing that the best way to stop bullying is to foster positive interactions and acts of kindness among individuals, Babylon Elementary School adopted the mantra “kindness counts” to encourage and celebrate acts of kindness within the school.

As part of the yearlong campaign, students have taken a kindness pledge, promising to speak and act in caring ways, and received silicone bracelets that read “It’s Cool to Be Kind” and “Kindness Starts with Me.” To reinforce the messages of the program, teachers addressed each of the points noted in the pledge through read-alouds and targeted role-playing scenarios.

Additionally, students and staff members have been recording acts of kindness displayed by others on leaves and placing those on a kindness tree in the main lobby. Students who are caught being kind throughout the year will also receive “It’s Cool to Be Kind” stickers.
