A Tree of Giving

Throughout December, kindergartners, first- and second-graders at Babylon Elementary School participated in a Giving Tree. Organized by administrative assistant Kathy Reynolds, the school adopted five local Babylon families for the holiday season. “We would like to share our joy by giving small gifts to make their holiday more festive,” wrote Ms. Reynolds in a letter sent home to school families.

With donations ranging from warm clothing to children’s toys, the Giving Tree was an opportunity for the school’s youngest students to learn a valuable lesson in community service. “I think it is essential to teach the importance of giving, helping others and experiencing a sense of selflessness,” said Principal Jessica Kemler. “We have a ‘kindness counts’ initiative where we celebrate random acts of kindness, and this is just another way we are teaching our students that concept.”
