Once Upon a Folktale

Babylon Elementary School first-grade students in Leah Weissinger’s class brought several familiar stories to life as a culminating activity to their English language arts study of folktales. As part of the Common Core curriculum and reader’s theater workshop, the students learned about the literary genre and the morals that these pieces teach readers. They focused on the famous tales of “Too Much Noise!,” “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” and “The Little Red Hen.”

In addition to the literacy study of the pieces, the students also worked to strengthen their fluency, reading comprehension, expression and public speaking skills, and they transformed the written word into three short plays. During the performances, which were held during the day for students and at night for families, each student assumed the role of one of the folktale characters and shared the tale’s age-old lessons with audiences.
