Babylon School District’s Board of Education took time during its second June meeting to celebrate and commend several students on their recent scholastic and athletic achievements.

The members of Babylon Memorial Grade School’s fifth-grade National Current Events team was honored for their first-place ranking in the National Current Events Olympiad Program. Each team member was presented with a commemorative certificate, and Derek Hulahan and Kevin Mroczka received medals for their individual first-place and second-place nationals ranking, respectively.

Christian Martino was recognized for receiving the Christopher D. O'Connell Memorial Scholarship in honor of his unselfishness, commitment, dedication and ‘team first’ attitude. This annual award is sponsored by the Christopher D. O’Connell Wings Memorial Scholarship Fund in the name of a former role player on the Sayville football team.

Although they were not in attendance, the Board also recognized the members of the varsity softball team for capturing the Class B Championship and the 2015 Dellecave Award-winning student-athletes Rachel Gregory and Stephen Schweitzer.

The district also thanked outgoing Board President Lisa McKeown for her dedicated service to the schools and community since joining the Board in 2009.
