A Rainbow of Flavor

Throughout the week of May 9, students at the Elementary School and Memorial Grade School were encouraged to “Eat the Rainbow.”

A collaboration between the district’s Food and Nutrition Department and the K-6 PTA Health and Wellness Committee, Eat the Rainbow Week is designed to encourage healthy eating habits and introduce students to new fruits and vegetables. In the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch, a new color of the rainbow was featured each day of the week. Students were also asked to pack a snack of the same color and wear that color to show their support of healthy eating habits.

Before the week kicked off, elementary students were treated to a lesson on the rainbow of fruits and vegetables on May 6 by Carol Ann Grodski, food service director and chef Marianna Dayton. Students learned about all the nutrients and vitamins provided by the different colored fruits and vegetables and were challenged to eat all the colors of the rainbow each day during the week. The students also sampled some vegetables in beet hummus.
