Countdown to Blastoff

Memorial Grade School sixth-graders took part in a cross-curricular lesson on June 15, counting down from 10 to blastoff as they took their individually designed rockets and launched them in the field outside of the school.

The students were charged with constructing their rocket, along with a parachute set to deploy on descent. Using their STEM skills, the sixth-graders learned how different factors – including wind velocity, direction and ergonomic design ¬¬– could have an impact on how their rocket soared.

Back in their classrooms, teachers discussed the activity and explained why certain factors were critical in the rockets launching or failing to take off.
