In recognition of his dedication and commitment to coaching, Babylon Junior-Senior High School head football coach Rick Punzone has been named a New York Jets High School Coach of the Week.

Punzone has been teaching at Babylon Memorial Grade School for 27 years and has been the head coach of the football team for 14 years. Under his leadership, the team has won five Long Island and 12 Suffolk County championships, all within the past 20 years.

“The team recently stopped Shoreham-Wading River’s 25-game winning streak,” said Punzone. “Although I received this award as the head coach, that achievement was possible because of the 42 players who played in that game. I am extremely proud of their hard work and preparation that went into that game.”

Punzone had been the running back and linebacker for his own alma mater, Walt Whitman High School, from which he graduated in 1981. He then attended SUNY Albany and played tailback for three years, winning the ECAC Division III Championships in his senior year.
