Comparing Cross-Cultural Celebrations

Comparing Cross-Cultural Celebrations thumbnail179047

Fourth graders in Samantha Covello’s class at Babylon Memorial Grade School are not only stellar students, they are global citizens. During a recent class activity, the students collaborated in groups of three to research how different cultures celebrate a range of holidays, including Chinese New Year, Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, La Befana, Las Posadas, Ramadan and St. Lucia Day.

After reading about their assigned holidays, the students spread out on the school field with their Chromebooks to review and write about the data they had collected. Each group then took center stage to present its findings to the class. The fourth graders enjoyed discovering what makes each of the holidays unique, as well as what ties them all together.
