Students Learn About the Different Components of Nonfiction Text

BABYLON, NEW YORK (January 2024)—Students in Ms. Kennedy’s third grade class at Babylon Memorial Grade School recently received a lesson in media literacy, and were tasked with identifying and understanding the different components of nonfiction text.

As part of the lesson, students read issues of Scholastic News Magazine and identified different components of the articles. The students highlighted and cut out the headlines, subhead lines, captions, charts and graphics from the articles to complete a scavenger hunt. The lesson gave the students practice with looking at the ways in which news is conveyed both in print and online.
