Babylon Elementary School Students, Staff Familiarize Themselves with Different Forms of Communication

BABYLON, NEW YORK (January 2024)—Students and staff at Babylon Elementary School recently had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with alternative forms of communication. By learning these different, non-verbal methods of communicating, members of the school community are able to better interact with their peers who may struggle with speech.

As part of the effort, BES Speech Pathologist Kelly Baccari led a series of grade-level assemblies on communication boards. The boards display a number of symbols and pictures that students can point towards to convey certain interactions. By using the boards, the students learned new ways to invite their friends to play at recess. The students look forward to using these communication boards on the playground when the weather becomes warmer!
