Babylon Elementary School students were filled with excitement as they prepared for the highly anticipated solar eclipse, which took place early this April. In anticipation of this celestial event, students engaged in a week-long educational journey, exploring the wonders of astronomy and the mechanics of eclipses.
Throughout the week, students delved into discussions about shadow projection and celestial movements under the tutelage of Ms. Moran. They discovered how the moon's position between the sun and the earth creates the eclipse phenomenon. To illustrate this cosmic alignment, students embarked on a hands-on activity, simulating the earth's orbit around the sun and the moon's orbit around the Earth by walking along a taped path.
Guided by their teachers, each student also crafted their own projection eclipse viewer. Emphasizing safety, students learned the importance of never looking directly at the sun due to its intense light. They were of course thrilled to discover, however, that with special protective gear, such as eclipse glasses or projectors, one is able to safely view the beautiful astronomical event. To further enhance their learning, students tested their eclipse viewers with a flashlight, preparing themselves for the real spectacle.
On the day of the eclipse, students showed off their special viewing glasses and projectors. In Ms. Pesce’s class, the students had additional eclipse lessons and activities, including making their own paper eclipses.
